Description:
|
This is a short film based on the 1979 film of the same name. NO FULL LENGTH REMAKE WAS EVER MADE. There was never any intention to remake the film. This film is stylized with the actors wearing modernized robes and Roman jewelry and females playing male characters and vice-versa and pays tribute to Caligula (see more in production notes.) |

Currently showing at museums in the United States.
Played in 2006 at the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
A five-and-a-half-minute, 35-millimeter video, the short ostensibly promotes a film about a mad Roman emperor (Mr. Vezzoli in a cameo) who sleeps with his sister, executes his critics and presides over a crowd of ambisexual extras dressed only in the occasional accessory.
Premiered at the 2005 Venice Biennale
Eliciting comparisons to the work of Andy Warhol, Francesco Vezzoli’s (b. 1971, Brescia, Italy) embroideries, videos, and live performances revolve around celebrities and the mechanics of fame and publicity. After producing works inspired by his favorite directors and divas of the 1960s, he turned his attention to the phenomenon of the contemporary Hollywood blockbuster in 2005. For Trailer for the Remake of Gore Vidal’s Caligula, Vezzoli created a star-studded trailer for an imaginary big-budget remake of the controversial 1979 cult classic Caligula. Featuring Helen Mirren and Adriana Asti from the original cast as well as young stars such as Milla Jovovich and Courtney Love, the spoof trailer is a high-camp parody of the superficiality and vacuousness of Hollywood. It is also an attempt to return ownership of Caligula to its original screenplay writer, Gore Vidal, who distanced himself from the project after major disagreements with producer Bob Guccione and others. Not only is Vidals name restored to the title, but he also introduces the trailer, explaining his original vision for the film as an allegory of the universal tendency for unbridled power to lead to madness and violence. It is a lesson that Vezzoli suggests is particularly timely today. Ted Mann – from the Guggenheim Collection website.

I did see the orginal version and it left a lasting impression., too sexually graphic and dark. I believe a remake of Caligula, “LIttle Boots”, with Gerard Butler, as Cassius Chaerea would be a great film. Perhaps, in the future it will be done..in a more historical , more visual adaption of Rome’s landscape and beauty , also more information on the Roman Empire, and the consequences of Caligula’s madness, and what created this monster.

I wonder why they wouldn’t remake this movie.. I know the original was rather, well, raw. But, I’m sure if they were to keep these performers(those that don’t have any hangups regarding the content and minus Courtney Love), it wouldn’t be a bad movie. When I first saw the trailer, I was actually excited about a reimagining of the story. But, when I saw Courtney love at the end, I was
immediately disappointed and realized it’s not gonna happen.
I think a remake wouldn’t be a bad move.
