'The Phantom of the Opera' star Gerard Butler is to appear in an adaptation of historical epic '300 Spartans'.
Hot on the heels of the hugely successful adaptation of Frank Miller's 'Sin City' earlier this year, it seems that another of the writer's graphic novels will soon be making it to the big screen.
'300 Spartans', Miller's take on the bloody battle of Thermopylae, is due to go into production in Montreal in October, with Zack Snyder, the man who so successfully remade 'Dawn of the Dead' last year, at the helm.
The sword and sandal epic will star Gerard Butler ('The Phantom of the Opera') as King Leonidas, the Spartan ruler who, together with 300 elite warriors, managed to defeat the huge Persian army at Thermopylae in 480 BC.
The film, which is based on a script written by Snyder and his writing partner Kurt Johnstad, will be made using greenscreens and virtual sets, to capture the look and feel of Miller's graphic novel.
Speaking of the project, producer Gianni Nunnari said: 'The combination of Frank Miller's trademark style, Zack Snyder's creative vision and our international ensemble cast, headed by Gerry Butler, will make this movie exciting for audiences of all ages all over the world, as it is the most entertaining way to tell the story of the 300 Spartans.'
