Two Sweet Home women, Orviletta James and Diane Freeman, wanted to know more about their favorite actor, Scottish born Gerard Butler, so they sent a letter to Lorrie Lynch, who writes the “Who’s News” column in USA Weekend.
Their query and her response appear in this weekend’s edition in the Democrat-Herald.
The women wrote, “We want to see more of Gerard Butler, from ‘Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life’ and ‘The Phantom of the Opera.’ Why is no one showing his newest movie, ‘Beowulf & Grendel,’ in the United States? It opened in Canada in March.”
Lynch’s response: “At press time, ‘Beowulf’ had no U.S. distributor, which is why you haven’t seen it here. But Butler, 36, has ‘300,’ adapted from a graphic novel, coming in 2007, and he’s in Canada filming a crime thriller, ‘Butterfly on a Wheel.’”
Butler, 36, has a law degree from Glasgow University. His main residence is in London, but he also has a loft in New York City.
He has a loyal fan club, keeping track of his roles in mainstream movies such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera,” “The Jury,” “Tomorrow Never Dies” and “The Bodyguard.” His international film credits are many and varied, including the 2005 “Beowulf and Grendel,” which is especially popular among his fans.
The Oregon chapter of Butler’s fan club will meet July 8-9 in Eugene.
