Amongst the comic book stalls, toy/statue presentations, creator panels and costumed geeks rises the snarling behemoth that is Hollywood. San Diego Comic-Con is saturated in movie posters, elaborate presentation booths and big splash film panels. These panels hype the forthcoming comic-related flicks that the L.A. crowd seem to be spitting out at the moment with great zeal (and with even greater budgets). They allow the blood hungry, sugar high, comic-freaks not only THE first look at the movie, but also an exclusive question and answer. Here are the three movies that rode the tsunami over all others at this year’s comic-con:

300 :

Zack Snyder, Frank Miller and stars, Gerard Butler and David Wenham hosted the panel of ‘300′ at Comic-Con. The film is shot completely with green screen alá Sin City, and will follow Sin City in being an almost panel-by-panel representation. Based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel, “300″ concerns the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians; the battle is said to have inspired all of Greece to band together against the Persians, and helped usher in the world’s first democracy. The epic five minutes of bloody, limb-loss drenched footage was so well received that it had to be played three times to quell the 1000’s gathered, who then bathed the panel with continuous applause and toothy grins. For those that thought the Lord of the Rings was boring (you know who you are), this will be the movie you can compare it to, because unless you’re Charles Manson with A.D.D., this will sedate your fast-paced epic, blood filled action requirements.

Grindhouse :

Robert Rodriguez kicked ass with Sin City a couple of years ago so this year he decided to Tarantino and Robertlay waste to Comic-Con by bringing Quentin Tarantino and a preview of Grindhouse, the double feature they have collaborated on. Make no mistakes ‘Grindhouse’ is the kind of movie that will beat your head against a large chunk of granite till your skull cracks open or your nose splinters into your brain. And you’ll thank them for it. Zombies, brutal slashing psychos, a babe with a machine gun for a leg, fake trailers for a possible Grindhouse sequel and a cast that includes Kurt Russell, Sidney “They call me Mr. Tibbs” Poitier, Tom Savini, beauties Rosario Dawson, Rose McGowan, Marley Shelton and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Do NOT do any drugs before going to see this movie !

Venom Spidey 3 :

There is a fear that Spider-man 3 has too much going on in it; a long arm list of villains, love interests out the wazoo, Parker going Emo and a plot that might be complicated enough to warrant subtitles. All these anxieties were washed away for those that attended the Spidey panel with one word, “Venom”. The footage shown, followed by a jovial Q&A session with Raimi and primary cast, brought the belief that the S.O.B. is gonna pull it off in spectacular fashion. Come on, he hasn’t let us down yet !

Honorable Mention: Snakes on a mutha****in’ plane !
