FORMER Glasgow hairdresser Kathleen McDermott is to bring Robert Burns' lover Jenny Clow to life in a steamy new Pounds 5 million feature film that will concentrate more on the Bard's romantic adventures than his poetry.
The actress will team up with Gerry Butler in the role of Burns, which was once earmarked for Johnny Depp.
Butler, whose casting was confirmed at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month, is Scotland's fastest-rising new star, co-starring with Angelina Jolie in the second Tomb Raider film and soon to be seen in the title role of the film version of Phantom of the Opera.
For McDermott the role of Jenny Clow represents a chance to build on a career that has flagged in the past two years since her first film Morvern Callar won her the Bowmore Scottish Screen Award for best Scottish actress of the year. Until then, the vivacious redhead had been training to become a hairdresser-before being spotted by a casting director while shopping in Argyle Street, Glasgow.
The cast also includes Brian Cox, currently a box office hit in Troy, John Hannah, David Hayman and David O'Hara. Other female characters remain to be cast.
