FROM Neighbours to Lock, Stock ... via EastEnders, with a few pop stars and socialites in between, Wales was awash with golfing celebrities this weekend.

The first Ladies Day at the Celtic Manor saw celebrities and golfing enthusiasts come from across the UK to watch the action and take advantage of the hospitality.

Actors Nick Moran, Gerry Butler and Michael Greco were spotted enjoying the VIP entertainment alongside Jason Donovan and singers Melanie Blatt and Mica Paris.

Actor Greco, who shot to fame in EastEnders, decided to return to Wales after previously enjoying the pro am.

He said, "It's beautiful here. I'm a big golf fan and just couldn't wait for another excuse to get back here."

More than 100 guests attended the weekend event, quaffing champagne and trying their hand at a few hole in ones.

Model Lisa Butcher, socialite Meg Matthews, presenter Lisa I'Anson and Welsh actress Josie D'Arby also attended the event at the Newport hotel.

Working on behalf of the Prince's Trust Cymru former Hi-De-Hi actress Ruth Madoc was collecting money for the charity sweepstake.

Money was also being raised from a percentage of the ticket sales to the Laurent Perrier Champagne Bar, a charity sweepstake on The Derby at Epsom and a bookmaker where, in exchange for a donation, guests were able to gamble monopoly money to bet on the day's action.

Sir Terry Matthews, owner of the Celtic Manor Resort said, "Ladies Day has been a fantastic success and we will certainly be hosting it once again next year.

"To see The Celtic Manor Wales Open gain an increased profile on the social scene can only help our efforts to raise the profile of the tournament."
