"300" which debuts this week in local cinemas tells the story of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480BC, when 300 Spartan soldiers mounted a suicide mission against the vast Persian army to buy time for Greek forces.
The film is close to $200 million in the US box office just after four weeks. The film was shot in blue and green screen studios in Montreal, with the exception of two days of insert shooting in Los Angeles.
This may be bad news for future film production in Malta, as we have thrived on offering excellent facilities for big epic films such as "Gladiator" and "Troy". More bad news could be the fact that "300" cost around $60 million while the budgets of "Gladiator" and "Troy" amounted to $288 million!
Gerard Butler ("The Phantom of The Opera") stars as Spartan King Leonidas in "300".
