THE widow of legendary James Bond producer Cubby Broccoli is on the verge of giving a little-known Scots actor the chance of becoming the next 007.
Industry insiders have speculated that new Bond series producer Barbara Broccoli would prefer another Scot to follow in the footsteps of Sean Connery, who many believe to be the 'best' Bond.
Rumour has it Mrs Broccoli intends to discuss the part with Gerard Butler, 32, who took up acting after gaining a law degree.
At 6ft 2ins, the dark-haired Glaswegian has the perfect looks for 007. Mrs Broccoli is believed to have set up a meeting with London-based Butler, a former president of Glasgow University law society. Butler takes on his first lead role in Wes Craven's Dracula 2000 in June.
The next film to come from the Bond stable so far known only as Bond XX will be Brosnan's fourth outing as 007, and he has said that he may bow out once the movie is completed.
But the choice of the next 007 is already sparking tension among leading members of the Eon Productions team. Bond director John Glen the man behind Octopussy has fed the rumour mill by saying 'the only man' who could replace Brosnan, 47, is Gladiator star Russell Crowe. 'To play Bond you need a man who has screen presence and is believable in the part,' he said.
'You could easily believe Russell capable of savagely bumping off bad men with a wry comment.' However, Eon Productions insist no discussions have begun about who will be the next Bond. A spokesman said: 'It is not even definite that Pierce will not be in the film after this one, but people have been gossiping.'
