Once the golden boy of the indie crime movie scene, Guy Ritchie has weathered some awful career hits in the last decade, but he looks to make a major comeback with the star-studded and awkwardly-titled RocknRolla, a crime tale that the auteur of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels wrote and directed. According to Variety, Gerard Butler, Tom Wilkinson, Thandie Newton, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, and Idris Elba have signed on to RocknRolla and production began a week ago today in London. The trade reports that Joel Silver is producing the thriller with Guy Ritchie, Steve Clark-Hall and Susan Downey and that Warner Brothers will release the film, presumably, sometime early next year.
The planned comeback for Guy Ritchie centers on a Russian mobster who works up a crooked land deal, which attracts millions of dollars and most of the criminal underworld of London. It sounds exactly like the kind of film - Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch - that made Guy Ritchie famous and pretty far from the notorious disastser, Swept Away, which starred Ritchie's wife, Madonna, and pretty much sunk the career of the once-rising star.
Hollywood Today reports that Gerard Butler will play One Two, a guy who has learned to play both sides of the fence, while Tom Wilkinson will play Lenny Cole, the head of the London mob, which is losing ground to the foreign mob. Thandie Newton plays the love interest for One Two and The Wire's Idris Elba plays Mumbles, the right-hand guy for our hero. Chris Bridges will play Roman, an American who is trying to break into the music scene in London.
Variety reports that RocknRolla will cost less than $20 million and be done in the same fast-paced style as Guy Ritchie's first two hits. With 300 star Gerard Butler on board, RocknRolla seems almost guaranteed to get Guy Ritchie back on the right blood-drenched career track. Steve Richards and Navid McIlhargey are executive producing and Lauren Meek will be the associate producer on the film.
Writer/Director Guy Ritchie has struggled since the one-two punch of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998 and Snatch in 2000. Swept Away, which starred his wife Madonna, bombed in 2002 and 2005's Revolver was never released. With a likely 2008 release date for RocknRolla, it's going to have been eight years since the last real hit for Guy Ritchie. Hopefully, this star-studded crime thriller can get the director's career back on track.
