Let's be honest here. There are some films that are designed to appeal mostly to women. P.S. I Love You, despite its A-list cast, is one of them. In fact, it's sort of like a romance novel on steroids.
Hilary Swank plays Holly, who's married to Gerry (Gerard Butler). The movie barely gets started, and he dies of cancer. Ah, but before he died, he wrote letters to Holly to be delivered after his death, giving her pointers on how to get along without him.
How does she know that? He left a tape recorded message telling her! So, we follow as she follows instructions, wondering if all this makes sense.
Kathy Bates plays Gerry's mom. Lisa Kudrow is one of Holly's girlfriends, who - for me - was the most engaging character in the movie.
The New York Times said it creates a swell of feeling. But The Arizona Republic called it uninspired and gave it only 2 1/2 out of 5. The Tribune came in with a C+. And the Washington Post said Hilary Swank can't do cute. Aside from the hanky factor, it wasn't that bad. I say 2 1/2 out of 4.
