Gerard Butler (300) seems to be running through a solid string of romantic comedies lately, mostly showing off his Scottish accent to draw in the 25-45 year old female crowd. It seems to be working as well, with his last film P.S. I Love You drawing in $52 million at the box office. Katherine Heigl (Knocked Up) also seems to have found some romantic comedy success outside of Knocked Up, with 27 Dresses already grossing over $45 million at the box office.

That said, I don’t blame Lakeshore Entertainment and Sony Pictures at all for putting these two stars together in the upcoming romantic comedy The Ugly Truth. As Variety reports, the “story centers on a romantically challenged morning show producer (Heigl) who is reluctantly embroiled by her chauvinistic correspondent (Butler) in a series of outrageous tests to prove his theories on relationships and help her find love.”

The film will reunite Legally Blonde director Robert Luketic and the writing team of Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith. It appears to be another very shallow, yet fun romcom — and I must admit that I can dig Butler as a chauvinistic antagonist. That is, as long as his shenanigans are devious. And that’s not to mention the fact that Heigl is, as they say in Latin America, muy caliente. Should you need evidence of this, please direct your attention to the picture on the right.

The Ugly Truth is scheduled to begin shooting in April in Portland, Oregon.
