THE Scots actor tipped to be the next James Bond has been told to forget it - by his mum.

Gerard Butler, 32, had been tipped as a favourite to take over from Pierce Brosnan after one more movie.

But mum Margaret said yesterday her son - now appearing as the Prince of Darkness in Wes Craven's gothic Dracula 2001 - would never top Sean Connery as the best Bond ever.

She said: "It made me laugh when I read that Gerard was in the running.

"Sean Connery will always be the best James Bond for most people. Like most women of a certain age, I quite like him.

"I have spoken to Gerard and, you can take it from me, it's just not going to happen.

"He was to meet Bond producer Barbara Broccoli and CNN announced he was 007. But there was no meeting."

Gerard, who grew up next to Ewan McGregor in Perthshire, quit the law - a week before he qualified - to act.

He said recently: "My family thought I was mad."

Next year, he has the lead role in Timeline, by Jurassic Park's Michael Crichton.
