VPJ: "The spunky little miss sunshine herself, Abigail Breslin, stars as...yes...a spunky little girl in this convoluted children's tale. OK, see if you can follow: Breslin's little girl lives on an island with hunky dad (Gerard Butler) and has adventures with her wacky animal pals (seal, lizard, possibly wombat) and her imagination, which is stoked by her obsessive love of a series of kids books written by Jodie Foster. Well (deep breath) dad goes missing, kid intercepts a fortuitous email from Foster (who she thinks is the hero of the books she reads and writes back for help, BUT...Foster's in New York and an agoraphobic who has visions of her central character (also played by Butler) who belittles and goads her into traveling to the titular island to help little miss spunkypants find her pops. Whew. And after they finish with all the exposition, there will be eight minutes left for, I dunno, some Foster/Butler smoochins and, probably some adorable animal antics. Why is Jodie Foster in this again?"
JE: "Because Jodie Foster loves kids and animals. And really, can you blame her? Adorable and interchangeable in just about any film, but when you combine both - get ready for your head to explode cause here comes cute overload. Look, I think it's clear at this point that we are just not the audience when it comes to mystical, magical children's movies unless they include computer animation is produced by the people at Pixar. I'm not going to say I would not take my kid to this movie - if I had a kid. I'm just saying maybe we're not meant to connect with a pre-teen girl protagonist and her lovable (possibly talking) animal gang."
