THE World Cup shocker when England were beaten by the USA is to be recreated on the big screen - with a Scot taking the lead role.

Paisley-born actor Gerard Butler will take the leading role of the Yanks' captain Frank Borghi, the goalie who led his side to a 1-0 victory in the 1950 World Cup. The movie is called The Game of Their Lives and will co-star Wes Bentley, who played the boy next door in American Beauty.

The film is based on the book by Geoffrey Douglas, who recorded the true story of events leading up to the amazing win.

The Americans, a quickly-assembled bunch of amateurs and semi-pros, were listed as a 500-1 shot by one bookmaker.

Director David Anspaugh, who specialises in making sports dramas such as Hoosiers, about basketball, and Rudy, about American football, said he was impressed by the pair's enthusiasm to start training immediately.

Reign of Fire star Butler has just completed work in Tomb Raider 2, in which he plays Angelina Jolie's love interest.

He said he would have preferred to have played Bentley's character, Walter Bahr, just because he was the defender who set up the winning goal.

The American side went on to lose 5-2 to Chile, and Uruguay finally won the tournament.
