The 34-year-old Glasgow-born star beat off a string of Hollywood heartthrobs including Antonio Banderas, John Travolta and Robert Redford to land the role of the disfigured Phantom.
But director Joel Schumacher chose former trainee solicitor Gerard, who locked lips with Angelina Jolie in last summer's Lara Croft movie Tomb Raider 2: Cradle of Life.
Joel said: "Gerard is a fine actor with a wonderful voice, who has a tremendous passion for the role."
