This week, one Cork lady, new to the world of ‘camera, lights and hold the mayo’, discovered that the film’s budget did not stretch as far as tea breaks for the extras.
On Monday, Niamh Parker was in Dublin to play her part in two day’s shooting of a PS I Love You nightclub scene at Whelan’s.
She, along with some 60 other extras, worked from 7.30pm until midnight, but, from 4pm on, neither food nor beverages were provided for them.
While Niamh and her co-extras went through their paces, two-time Oscar winning actress Hilary Swank and co-star Gerard Butler, along with the executive crew members, feasted on Indian cuisine which had been ordered in.
“At one point, into the evening, I was up in the balcony looking down on Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler eating an Indian curry. I thought I was going to collapse with the hunger.
“If it wasn’t for one of the Irish crew, who went out and bought me a packet of crisps, I wouldn’t have survived,” Niamh said.
Niamh, who owns the Thai Cottage on Main Street, Kinsale, stressed that she was not expecting the star treatment, but the provision of even a vending machine would have been much appreciated.
“If the director has any time off during shooting he should get a copy of a Father Ted episode and see how important tea is to Irish people,” she joked.
Nonetheless, she found the experience worthwhile. Niamh is at present working on a screenplay and sought work as an extra on PS I Love You primarily as a means of seeing, first hand, a film in the making.
“Yes, I would do it again, but next time I’ll bring a flask and sandwiches,” she said.
The film, in which a grieving widow finds her husband’s warmth radiating from the afterlife when she discovers that he has left her a series of tasks, which will be revealed in ten monthly messages, designed to help her overcome her sorrow and successfully make the transition into a new life, will be released next year.
Director Richard LaGravenese, whose movie credits include The Bridges of Madison County and The Horse Whisperer appeared to have very little regard for the extras, she said.
