Zack Snyder, director of the upcoming graphic-novel adaptation 300, told SCI FI Wire that he changed Frank Miller's book to play up the role of Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey), wife of Spartan King Leonidas (Gerard Butler). "We wanted to make sure that ... the battles didn't become abstract in the sense that I didn't want people to lose track of what they were fighting for," Snyder said in an interview at WonderCon in San Francisco over the weekend. "So the idea of checking back in with Sparta was the thing that we felt like made sense from the beginning."

Miller's novel deals with the mythic battle of 300 Spartan warriors against the hordes of the Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. The book features a few scenes of Gorgo, which Snyder expanded.

"I feel like when you see Leonidas at the end of the graphic novel, the last thing he says is, 'My queen, my wife, my love,'" Snyder said. "And I thought, ... for an audience, it's been an hour and a half since we've seen her. ... With a graphic novel, you can flip back and go, 'Oh, yeah, that's right, OK.' In the film, you need to give it to them a little bit right before."

Snyder added that the additional moments help balance the action-heavy movie, which is dominated by male characters. "I think so," he said. "I think it does in some ways. It keeps the movie from just being a boy freak-out." 300 opens March 9.
