It would be a bit silly to complement the terrific plot of this film given that it's based on historical events (except, perhaps, the mutants). Which is why I'm instead going to pay tribute to the movie's outstanding aesthetics:
The choice of lens throughout 300 varied impeccably to give a glorious effect that really brought the setting to life and yet maintained its rustic appeal. The choreography of each fight sequence was probably the most graceful and articulated form of killing you could ever imagine. And that's not to mention the special effects, particularly the slow-motion spurting blood, that really enriched the whole film without using so much that it turned into a CGI fest.
Doubtlessly, the film owes much of this to the source of its inspiration - none other than a comic book series of the same name by graphic master Frank Miller (creator of the similarly spectacular Sin City series).
And, if you're not the type of person who goes to a movie for the sake of its visual brilliance, then know that it is still far more than worthwhile for the incredibly action-packed battles and rich historical interest.
This truly is a contemporary epic, and I strongly urge anyone (except perhaps those who aren't partial to blood and war) to go and see it soon, before it ends its run on the big screen where it is so much more at home than your living room.
