The movie 300 is based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller, who also gave us the base material on which Sin City was based, and like Sin City, this is a movie which is big on style, and the look, which is beautiful, is very much the look of a graphic novel. I have no idea how historically accurate it is, but to be honest, I don't really care. It's a stunning feast for the eyes, although it's definitely not for the faint hearted.

The story is set in 480 BC, and the Persian King Xerxes is about to launch his massive army in an attack on Greece. The Spartan King Leonidas is determined to resist the Persian army, and when the oracle forbids him his request to take an army, he decides to take the battle to the enemy anyway, but with just a small group of 300 men. He and his men take over a narrow corridor of land through which the Persians must pass to get to their target, and despite the difference in number, the Spartans succeed in putting up a tremendous battle.

This is epic film making with CGI enhanced effects, and the result is a visual feast, both in terms of film making and also, I must say, in terms of the hunks swinging their Spartan swords. The Spartans, led by the wonderfully charismatic Gerard Butler, are one and all men made of muscle and steel and they look great. It's extremely gory, obviously, since most of the film is made up of bloody battle sequences, and there's blood flying around most of the time, together with various body parts. But unless you're really squeamish, it's worth the occasional yuck factor for the rush you feel watching the movie.
