Scot tipped for Bond role - Little-known actor in talks

As speculation intensifies over who will be the next James Bond, it appears that Scottish actor Gerard Butler has been approached. Producer Barbara Broccoli is set to meet the 32-year-old in the summer to discuss the possibility of taking the part. The Glasgow-born actor would take the role back north of the border for the first time since Sir Sean Connery hung up his Walther in 1983. Butler, who is 6ft 2in, has already had a taste of the Bond experience, appearing as a baddie in Tomorrow Never Dies. He also appeared alongside Dame Judi Dench and Billy Connolly in Mrs Brown, and during the filming he saved a young boy from drowning. An insider said: ‘Bond is Scottish in Fleming’s books, so it would make sense to have a Scot in the role. They also like less well-known faces.’ Another scot, Dougray Scott, is said to have been offered the role last year but, amazingly, to have turned it down. Despite the speculation, the current holder of the licence to kill, Pierce Brosnan, is keen to hold on to it for as long as possible. Hailed as the best Bond since Connery, he may be hard to shift.
