Jodie Foster and "Little Miss Sunshine" star Abigail Breslin are near deals to star in "Nim's Island," a Walden Media-financed fantasy.

In addition, Breslin has set another vehicle, period film "American Girl" for Picturehouse and HBO Films.

"Nim's Island" concerns a young girl who accompanies her scientist father to an isolated island in the South Pacific. When he is lost at sea, she communicates electronically with a person she imagines to be a character from a book but is in fact a reclusive author.

Joseph Kwon and Paula Mazur penned "Nim's Island," based on the book by Wendy Orr and Kerry Millard. Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin will direct, with Cary Granat and Paula Mazur producing. Pic lenses this summer, and 20h Century Fox will distribute under the Fox Walden banner.

"American Girl" is inspired by the line of dolls and accessories. The 11-year-old Breslin will play Kit Kittredge, based on the popular doll. Story follows Kit as she tries to help save her family as it struggles through the Depression.

Ann Peacock ("The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe") penned the script. A director will be set shortly. Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Marisa Yeres and Lisa Gillan are producing. Filming begins June 4.

Breslin is agented by WMA and Coast to Coast, and managed by Envision Entertainment. Foster's repped by ICM.
