Universal Pictures' specialty division Universal Focus has picked up U.S. distribution rights to "Harrison's Flowers," which stars Andie MacDowell and David Strathairn.

The first English-language pic from French helmer Elie Chouraqui, pic was released in France on Jan. 24 and is slated for a fall release Stateside.

Drama tells the 1991 story of a distinguished war photojournalist (Strathairn) whose wife (MacDowell) refuses to believe he's dead after he goes missing on his farewell assignment in Yugoslavia.

Staggering images

After she barricades herself to watch CNN 24/7, she becomes convinced that she has seen her husband among a group of prisoners and flies to Europe to drive into war-torn Yugoslavia. Along the way, she photographs the atrocities she witnesses and sends the pics back to her husband's employer, attributing them to him.

Written by Chouraqui, Isabel Ellsen, Michael Katims and Didier Le Pecheur and produced through Le Studio Canal Plus, "Harrison's Flowers" also stars Elias Koteas, Adrian Brody and Brendan Gleeson.

U Focus recently announced the U.S. acquisition of another French box office hit, "Brotherhood of the Wolf," which the U label also plans to release this fall.
