An unnamed Warner Bros source reports that the pirate comic "Tales of the Black Freighter" will make it onto the Watchmen DVD as a live-action special feature.

Moviehole's RAMIUS passed on a report from "a friend at Warner" today (31 Oct) that the studio has agreed to finance the fan-favorite "Tales of the Black Freighter" story as a live-action segment to be included as a special feature on the DVD release of Zach Snyder's Watchmen movie.

"Tales of the Black Freighter" is a comic book within the Watchmen graphic novel's universe. Since the alternate earth created by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons has flesh-and-blood superheroes, there are no capes-and-cowls comic books. There are, instead, pirate comics. The comic chronicles the attempt of a castaway to return home and warn his family of the approaching phantom pirate ship The Black Freighter.

Early pre-production reports suggested that the "Black Freighter" segment had been cut from the schedule due to costs and film length. Ramius confirms this latest news as "straight from the mouth of Warner Bros."

He did not mention possible casting. There were rumors in the summer that Snyder might call on his 300 star, Gerard Butler, to play the comic's protagonist. But the likelihood of Butler performing for a DVD special feature is anyone's guess. However, since the star of Dracula 2000 now has departed from the Escape from New York remake, there may be an opening in his schedule.
