The thought of Matthew McConaughey slaying dragons is still a little bit unsettling to me. I'm not saying it's bad casting. I just can't picture him in a fantasy piece like Reign of Fire. In Reign McConaughey plays a dragon slayer of American origin, who meets Christian Bale's character, whose mother was killed by the dragons. The two join forces in an attempt to destroy the dragon queen. Bale and McConaughey star alongside Alexander Siddig (Star Trek: DS9, Vertical Limit), Izabella Scorupco (Vertical Limit, GoldenEye), and Gerard Butler (Dracula 2000, TNT's sweet mini-series Attila).
You'll remember Alexander Siddig as Dr. Bashir from Deep Space Nine. In Reign of Fire he plays a half-English and half-Pakistani character named Ajay, the best friend of one of the main characters. Dark Horizons points to a recent post on Siddig's Official Site where he talks a bit about the film and Ajay. He says, "I wear a goatee (of sorts) in this picture – very unkempt looking as we are all urchins after the proverbial 'armageddon' of Dragon wrath – the entire world has been devastated by them and only ashes remain and a few struggling survivors holding out in a castle (old medieval style). I use an approximation of a cockney accent – more north London really." Sid also commented that he is enjoying working with director Rob Bowman (The X-Files: Fight the Future).
The story of Reign is certainly original, and could make for a really cool genre film. Ain't It Cool News scored a peek at the story today. Here's a little about the film's introduction:
The film opens in modern-day London. City workers are digging a subway tunnel when they come upon a strange cave under the city. The crew foreman, a woman who happens to have her 6-year-old son with her today, enters the cave and finds that the dirt has been crystallized. Suddenly, there's a burst of fire and the entire crew is engulfed in the flames. We cut back to the surface where we see the woman's son still waiting. The earth trembles, and cracks as a huge dragon bursts from the ground and up into the sky.
The film then takes us into the future where the child (Bale's character) is all grown up. He is the leader of a band of humans clinging to their existence in the English countryside. That's all we'll reveal here, but visit AICN if you want the rest of the spoiler-filled scoop.
-- Brian Linder hopes nobody gets this confused with Kiefer Sutherland's rodeo movie Ring of Fire.
