The star's rough and ready new look is all for the sake of his latest part - playing dragon fighter Creedy in the new Disney action-adventure blockbuster Reign of Fire.
The 6ft 2in Paisley-born actor joins Hollywood pin-ups Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale in the big budget romp which is set just 18 years in the future when a brood of fire-breathing dragons emerges from the earth and begins setting fire to everything. The film, which opens in Britain on August 16, and will help confirm the Glasgow University educated former lawyer - who made his breakthrough playing the title roles in TV's Attila the Hun and a new movie version of Dracula - as top leading man material.
Now settled in Hollywood, Butler, 33, said: "Having had a previous career and being a bit older now I am amazed at how I take it in my stride."
While his rugged good looks have placed him in the running to be the next 007 when Pierce Brosnan quits, Butler said: "I find the whole Bond thing quite humorous. All I'll say is that Barbara Broccoli (the Bond movie producer) hasn't asked to see me yet."
If she does, she might have to join the queue.
Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner has cast Butler in the lead of his new movie Timeline, playing the boss of a group of young archaeological students trapped in the past as they try to rescue their professor.
However Butler, whose debut role was playing Billy Connolly's younger brother in Mrs Brown, is taking it one step at a time. He wants Reign of Fire to be a box office smash first.
He added: "For me it is about playing a variety of different roles that are of interest to me at the time.
"This one has over a hundred million dollar budget. It is Alien meets The Thing. We live 20 years in the future when the earth has been wiped out by dragons. We live in the castle there is only a few of us left.
"Christian Bale and I, we run the castle.
We have been blown out the cities and this is our last place of refuge. Matthew McConaughey turns up with a bunch of tanks. It sounds silly when you are talking about it, but the idea behind it is good."
