Butterfly on a Wheel (aka Shattered in the US) (blog)
Article Date: January 6, 2008 | Publication: multiply.com | Author: bluesteel14
The film’s title is an allusion to a line of Alexander Pope’s Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot: “Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel?” The line is usually interpreted as questioning why someone would put massive effort into achieving something minor or unimportant. And a lot effort was really exerted by the main character (played by Brosnan) indeed.
This is the movie's usual description online... "A happy couple with a seemingly perfect life has their daughter abducted. Over the course of a day, the kidnapper dismantles the family's lives with brutal efficiency."
It has been a while since i have seen a movie that I can't guess the ending after the first 20-30 minutes. And this is very good thriller with a very surprising ending. You know the "Who," from the very beginning so the question that keeps the plot moving is the "Why?". This movie proved to be a very original story when I was expecting the usual kidnap flick. The ending was unpredictable and almost laughable because this time the cliche had a different twist: "Hell hath no fury than a MAN scorned."
Great acting, great directing. Director Mike Barker does a great job in using different ways to portray the pain and anguish in Butler's character. Brosnan is brilliant as usual, and plays his character perfectly by having a straight face throughout. This helps fool viewers as the twists are revealed one after the other. You would think that he (Brosnan) would act a little insane throughout, because of what he knows, but his plans require him to be "professional". Gerry Butler was superb. Turning in an impressive performance, even nailing an American accent, our mighty Spartan once again proves he can act! (NOTE: His Scottish accent does pop up every now and then. But not a bad Chicago accent, Gerry!). With each new movie, he continues to demonstrate his versatility.
Make no mistake folks, this movie will keep you guessing. This film is a why-duhhit (instead of a who-dunnit) in every sense.
