The tanking of all-star vehicles like Charlie Wilson's War and The Good German have Corliss asking whether the concept of a movie star is still relevant. Judging stardom by box office success, 2007's icons were the likes of Gerard Butler and indie breakout Ellen Page, while star-driven films lacked the punch to pull in the crowds. Corliss' piece is ambitious but messy; the Robert Redford-level screen idols he champions hardly lit up the multiplexes with big summer blockbusters even in their heyday, although his definition of movie stardom might differ from readers'.
