HOLLYWOOD film producers seem to have stopped making movies at the Fox Studios in Sydney (temporarily, we hope) but the Barrier Reef still beckons.
Nim's Island, rated PG and opening this week, was made at various locations in Queensland, but mostly on Hinchinbrook Island.

It stars Abigail Breslin from Little Miss Sunshine as Nim, an avid reader of adventure books written by Alex Rover in which the hero is also called Alex Rover.

Nim lives on a tropical island with her father, a scientist, played by Gerard Butler. In a double role, Butler also appears as Alex Rover.

When her father goes missing at sea, Nim seeks help from Alex, the writer, who despite her pathological shyness will eventually leave her home in Los Angeles and head for Nim's Island where to Nim's surprise, Alex is actually Alexandra, played by Jodie Foster.

A wonderful blend of fact and fantasy, Nim's Island, based on the book of the same name by Wendy Orr, adds up to ideal school holiday entertainment.
