P.S. I Love You
Article Date: May 6, 2008 | Publication: The Province | Author: Carey Gillette
If you're planning a girls night this weekend to watch P.S. I Love You, then there's a very important accessory you'll need. No, no popcorn. Or margaritas. Rather, make sure you have a jumbo-size box of tissues, 'cause this one had my pals and I tearing up on several occasions. Hilary Swank plays Holly Kennedy, an aimless New Yorker who is thrown into a depression when her husband dies of a brain tumour. (He's played by Gerard Butler but, don't worry, ladies, he returns in flashbacks.) On her 30th birthday, Holly received a present from her late husband, which is followed by a series of letters that send her on a journey of self-discovery. Yes, there are some corny moments and a few eyebrow-raising coincidences. But it's also fun, sweet and, yes, sad, and has a great cast that also includes Lisa Kudrow, Kathy Bates and Harry Connick Jr.
You'd think that with a cast that includes Butler, Connick Jr. and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (a.k.a. Denny from Grey's Anatomy) that the best-looking part of P.S. I Love You would be the guys. Well, you'd be right. But a close runner-up are the postcard-perfect images of Ireland, which will have you surfing Expedia for package deals.
"A Conversation with Author Cecelia Ahern" is an interview with the young writer who penned the book on which the movie is based. The young Irish woman talks about how the "little story" she wrote for herself turned into an international bestseller. Ahern also says she didn't mind the way the movie was "Americanized" for the big screen and that Butler so fit her idea of the Gerry character that she "just wanted to give him a big hug." Get in line, sister.
"The Name of the Game is Snaps" is an amusing black-and-white instructional video, not that you'll ever want to play it. There's also a montage of additional scenes that includes both deleted sequences and outtakes, and a music video for James Blunt's "Same Mistake."
