FILM hunk Gerard Butler has thanked thousands of honest comic book fans - after losing his GBP 5,000 Rolex watch and designer sunglasses at a convention.

The "300" star thought that someone had stolen his limited edition timepiece and expensive shades after being mobbed by a staggering 6,800 comic fans in San Diego.

Paisley-born Gerard was autographing posters for fans when he took his watch off as it kept getting caught in the paper.

He tucked it between his legs along with the shades as the promotion of new gangster flick RocknRolla turned into a near riot.

After a lively question and answer session with director Guy Ritchie, Butler stayed on to sign autographs for the crowd.

He said: "It was madness. I was signing posters and my watch kept catching on them, so I took it off and put it between my legs and then walked off.

"And then I thought someone stole my sunglasses."

Butler alerted security but the actor did not take into account the comic fans' code of conduct.

The valuables were returned minutes later. Gerard, 38, added: "This place is just mad, but it's also fantastic.

"I truly apologise for my initial reaction that someone had just stolen my stuff.

"That was so wrong. This place is madness, but I do love it."

Butler said he was surprised to be invited to Comic-Con to promote a non-superheroes kind of film such as RocknRolla.

The film has the gritty London crime setting that harks back to the filmmaker's breakthrough projects, Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

He said: "It's so great to be in a Guy Ritchie film - they're so masculine and funny and smart and just daft."
