GUY RITCHIE’s brilliant new gangster movie RocknRolla is about to hit our cinemas.
And on Friday night I had the pleasure of being one of the first to see it.
I spent the evening in the company of a millionaire Russian, some Cockney gangsters, a sexy, corrupt accountant, a charming Scottish thug and some junkies.
There were guns, lashings of violence, some cracking laddish humour and killer crayfish thrown in for good measure.
If that wasn’t enough for a decent night out, Guy had a beer with me to toast his latest movie.
Guy told me: “I’m really proud of the film – I’ve written a second and sketched out a third. If RocknRolla goes well we’ll be back for another.”
And he should be proud, too – the film is absolute class.
I love gangster films. Get Carter is my favourite of all time. Guy’s previous movies Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch are up there too. But RnR is his most polished to date.
Guy wrote, directed and produced this surefire box-office hit, proving he is the master of bringing complex criminal scams to the big screen.
Russians buying up top London property with their deep pockets is Guy’s latest interest.
Lead character Uri has the yacht, money and even the appearance of Chelsea owner ROMAN ABRAMOVICH.
The film, set in various London locations – including Wembley stadium – looks amazing and the casting is excellent.
TOM WILKINSON, GERARD BUTLER, THANDIE NEWTON, MARK STRONG and rising talent TOBY KEBBELL, are all at the top of their game.
Toby, in particular, is something special and a star of the future. He was the stand-out performance in BBC drama series The Street last year. His part in SHANE MEADOWS’ film Dead Man’s Shoes was fantastic as was his role as ROB GRETTON in the BAFTA-winning IAN CURTIS biopic Control.
The intricate double-crossing in Lock, Stock was a hard task to beat – but Guy has managed it.
The plot is gripping stuff and, amazingly, all based on a true story.
I won’t give the game away, but it’s about a Russian mobster who sets up a crooked land deal with millions of euros up for grabs.
A crime lord, an accountant, a corrupt politician and petty thieves collude and collide with one another in an effort to get their hands on it.
One of the best things is that the film has a To Be Continued ending, so a cast of criminals are ready to be unleashed again.
RnR is out on September 5 and film bosses are waiting to see how it does before committing to the sequel.
It’s a no-brainer.
Get the man signed up for volume two before you miss the boat.
Or before a Russian billionaire has him bumped off . . .
