Guy Ritchie is becoming the Woody Allen of gangster films. His supporters are always spotting a return to form. The reason for this is simple: each new awful Guy Ritchie film seems less awful than the last Guy Ritchie film we saw.

RocknRolla is not as awful as Swept Away, but itís not a return to form, either. It was obviously conceived in the pre-credit-crunch era, when the London building boom was in motion and getting a fist on the property ladder was every villainís dream. The film sets itself up for a big showdown between a Russian billionaire, Uri Obomavich (Karel Roden) and an old-school gangster, Lenny Cole, (Tom Wilkinson) with a gang of small-time villains, led by One Two (Gerard Butler), in the middle. But the drama soon goes all flat and flabby.
