The film, which marks a return to the type of London-based gangster territory as debut hit Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, posted initial takings of £1.56m, fending off the sustained challenge of Mamma Mia! The Movie and new release, The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley.
For Ritchie, the top spot marks something of a vindication for his decision to return to familiar territory following the critical and commercial flops of both his Madonna vehicle, Swept Away, which failed to secure a UK release, and the Jason Statham starrer Revolver, which was roundly panned.
It also virtually guarantees a sequel, as hinted at in the denouement of the film.
RocknRolla picks up as millions of dollars are up for grabs when a Russian mobster orchestrates a crooked land deal and all of Londonís criminal underworld wants in on the action. Everyone from a dangerous crime lord to a sexy accountant, a corrupt politician and down-on-their-luck petty thieves conspire, collude and collide with one another in an effort to get rich quick.
The film stars Gerard Butler, Thandie Newton, Tom Wilkinson and Mark Strong (among many others).
Elsewhere at the UK box office
Abba musical Mamma Mia! continued to be popular with UK audiences, holding onto second position in the chart on its ninth week of release.
The film, which has recently received an added boost from the distribution of a sing-along version, now has made a total of £56.3m Ė well ahead of Batman movie The Dark Knight, which slipped from fifth to seventh spot in its seventh week of release with takings to date of £46.9m.
Of the other new entries, The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley in a film thatís said to resemble the life of Princess Diana, entered at number three, with Disaster Movie also new in fifth place.
Bangkok Dangerous, a new Nicolas Cage action-vehicle that topped the American box office over the same weekend, could only muster tenth place in the UK chart.
