On the Playground several of us have hero hunks that we covet and dream of taking to the kissing booth. It’s a lot of fun enjoying our addictions and, if it makes us smile, why not. In my opinion, their mother worked darn hard to produce that gorgeous hunk so why shouldn’t we appreciate the fruits of her labor?

What is it about our hero hunks that captivate us? They have a unique flair drawing us to them. A sex appeal that not every man is born with – and, yes I do believe it’s something special they are born with. You can see future leaders, heartthrobs, athletes as young as in pre-school. I’d say it’s a sort of magnetism that just comes naturally.

Who is the perfect quintessential man? We all have our opinions. The fact that these opinions are so varied is why we have so many gorgeous hunks to chose from. Sort of like a box of chocolates - we all have our favorite pieces.

How does a director choose the most perfect actor to fill a role? Do they need certain hero hunk traits to fill their character’s needs? One director that I heard speak said she searched years for the right person to play the stranger in Dear Frankie. She almost didn’t produce the film because she thought he couldn’t be found. Then, when Gerard Butler walked into her office to audition for the part, she knew in an instant he was the person to portray her hero.

Can you imagine anyone but the remarkable Johnny Depp playing Captain Jack Sparrow? It’s inconceivable that someone else has the same uniqueness to play this hero. He made that pirate come to life. I tried to imagine someone like Colin Firth in Jack’s role. Wouldn’t work. Cast as Mr. Darcy, Colin was in his element and produced a memorable character. As Jack Sparrow he would leave the audience wanting for someone more exciting - a “bad boy.” In reverse, could you see Johnny Depp playing Mr. Darcy?

Or what if they’d cast someone else to play Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind? Who but Clark Gable could say, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn?” When they produced the sequal to Gone With The Wind with Timothy Dalton playing Rhett Butler, everyone was disappointed. Even the accent was wrong. Still can’t figure out that choice. I think Gable has to be one of the original hero hunks. His bad boy personality radiated off the screen, and that wide smile and those dimples had to have made the ladies of that generation swoon. They still do today.

Could you imagine Sly Stallone as Mr. Darcy, Charlton Heston as Tootsie, Robin Williams as Gladiator, Martin Short as Dracula or George Clooney as King Leonidas? Boggles the mind.

I know why I chose my hero hunk. What traits turn your libido upside down, inside out and over the top?
