SCOTS actor Gerard Butler is starring as a swashbuckling pirate in a new cartoon.

The 39-year-old Glaswegian voices the Mariner in animated short The Tales of the Black Freighter.

It will be a bonus feature on superhero flick The Watchmen - which goes on general release on Friday - when it goes out on DVD.

Butler, who starred in sword-and-sandals epic 300 - also based on a graphic novel - said: "I'm the voice of the captain.

"It's in the style of a Japanese action cartoon and I'm totally stoked.

"It's this descent into madness but explained in such a sane way that you totally feel it yourself.

"By the end, my heart was pumping"

In the Black Freighter, Gerard is swept up in a pirate story after being left adrift for weeks when his boat is destroyed in battle.

When he's rescued he wreaks revenge on the men who ruined his life.

The Watchmen is directed by Zack Snyder, who also directed 300.

Snyder had asked Gerard to appear in The Watchmen but commitments got in the way.

Gerard is now set to make a film about the life of Robert Burns later this year.
