"I think if there's been any evolution it's probably been on the part of women," says Butler with a laugh, adding that despite his sex-symbol status, "I pretty much screw every relationship up."
The single 39-year-old star wonders how women could ever figure him out since he can't seem to figure himself out. He jokes to ET's Mark Steines, "I'm a weird one. … I don't know how the hell women are supposed to work me out, because I certainly can't."
In the movie, he plays hardcore TV personality Mike Chadway, who pulls no punches -- on air and off -- about the ugly truth on what makes men and women tick. Katherine plays Abby, a high-strung and romantically challenged morning show producer whose search for Mr. Perfect has left her hopelessly single. Will their immediate friction create sparks? Is there actual truth to the pull-no-punches "truth" that 'The Awful Truth' explores?
"A lot of it is a mask, and [men] think like that to a certain extent," explains Butler, "but we don't base out whole lives on that. We're more complex than that, and that's where the movie goes. Mike, himself, longs for something more than just looking at a short skirt."
After a moment of thought, Butler laughs and proclaims, "There's nothing wrong with that! I realized, wait a minute, what would you want more than that?"
Asked about his "Grey's Anatomy" co-star, he says, "I think the best way to describe her is she's an alpha female. She's a classy lady, but at the same time she loves a glass of wine, she loves to go out, have a nice dinner, have a lot of fun and have a Burger King during the day. I like that in a girl. I'm a sports boy. I like a girl that likes to sit down and have a pint. I like a girl who's one of the guys."
And as for the aforementioned sex symbol status, Butler keeps it all in perspective, saying, "I understand that just because you suddenly appear on a big screen that people find you sexy, you've got to take that with a pinch of salt."
