In an exclusive interview, Gerard Butler has compared the tone of forthcoming action sequel Angel Has Fallen to Logan. Olympus Has Fallen was a throwback to the eighties style of action movie, featuring a foul-mouthed hero, snappy one-liners and a high bodycount. It wasn’t terribly sophisticated entertainment, but thanks to the slick direction and a cast that was better than the material deserved – including Aaron Eckhart, Melissa Leo and Morgan Freeman – it went on to become a sleeper hit. It also beat Channing Tatum’s White House Down at the box-office, which was that year’s other Die Hard in the White House movie.

Most of the cast returned for London Has Fallen, which found Butler’s burly Secret Service agent trying to keep the President alive after a terrorist attack in London. The sequel didn’t receive great reviews, but again it proved to be a solid hit, and another sequel was soon announced. Angel Has Fallen will apparently revolve around an attack on Air Force One, and while that makes it sound like a remake of the Harrison Ford movie of the same name, Butler has been teasing the next entry will be a darker, more contained story.

During an interview with Screen Rant for his new thriller Den Of Thieves, Butler talked about Mike Banning’s next outing, and compared it to Hugh Jackman’s acclaimed Logan. According to Butler, it seems everyone involved wanted to scale the action of the series down slightly.

I’m about to make the next Has Fallen. Which is more like The Fugitive. It’s our version of Logan, what that was to Wolverine, that’s to this. It’s a lot of city falling, and even we were like ‘how many cities can we have fall?’ So it’s going to be really surprising and visceral and we have a great director on that too Ric Waugh, who just did that movie Shot Caller with Jonny Bernthal.

That certainly makes it sound like Angel Has Fallen will be more character based, and rely less on spectacle. While Logan featured solid action sequences, it was far more interested in exploring Wolverine’s damaged psyche, which made it one of the more unique comic book movies in a long time. Sadly Aaron Eckhart won’t be joining Butler on the fun, with the actor confirming he won’t be coming back as president Benjamin Asher from the previous two installments.

The Has Fallen series has proven to be a reliable series for Butler, whose recent works outside the franchise hasn’t fared as well. Big budget disaster flick Geostorm failed to make much of an impact, and the less said about Gods Of Egypt the better. Butler has proven he can be a solid dramatic actor with the right material, so it sounds like he wants to give Mike Banning a proper dramatic sendoff with Angel Has Fallen.

Angel Has Fallen doesn’t currently have a release date, but we’ll update you as more information arrives.
