WHEN stars turn out in the name of Robert Burns, it is usually for supper.

But this line-up of Scottish talent is backing a very special project in the name of Scotland's national poet. Yesterday they helped launch the new Burns Film and Television Festival at a ceremony in Glasgow.

Aimed at young people interested in getting into the business, the festival will bring them together with screen names such as Tomb Raider star Gerry Butler, Morvern Callar actress Kathleen McDermott and comedy star Rory McCann of The Book Group fame.

Costing just GBP 5 on May 3 and 4, the wannabes will be able to attend screenings, workshops and talks by some of the top names in the industry.

Those who have pledged their support include Peter Mullan, David Hayman, Greg Hemphill, Ford Kiernan, Simone Lahbib, Joe McFadden and Martin Compston. Festival director Beverley Morrison said: "If Robert Burns were alive today, he'd be working in film or TV."
